It is said, at least once in a lifetime, one should embark upon the ultimate pilgrimage to the ‘Char Dham’. A soul enriching, breathtakingly beautiful journey that takes you into the very lap of the Himalayas – the abode of Gods.

The Char (four) Dham (holy places) include Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. These four temples dating back to ancient times, also mark the spiritual source of four sacred rivers: River Yamuna (Yamunotri), River Ganga (Gangotri), River Mandakini (Kedarnath) and River Alaknanda (Badrinath). The Yamunotri temple is lodged in a narrow gorge close to the source of River Yamuna in Uttarkashi district, and is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Gangotri dedicated to Goddess Ganga – the most sacred of all Indian rivers – is also located in Uttarkashi district. Kedarnath, dedicated to Lord Shiva lies in the Rudraprayag district; while Badrinath in Chamoli district is home to the sacred Badrinarayan Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

It is believed that one should complete the Char Dham Yatra in a clockwise direction. Hence, the pilgrimage starts from Yamunotri, proceeds towards Gangotri, onto Kedarnath, and finally ends at Badrinath. You can also do a ‘Do Dham Yatra’ or a pilgrimage to two shrines – Kedarnath and Badrinath.
